Board of Directors
Nick Carter
Nick Carter recently retired
after having been a fisheries biologist and ecologist with Maryland Department
of Natural resources for 35 years. Nick has a bachelor's in biology from Old Dominion University
and a master's in fisheries biology from the University of Washington.
He has worked in fisheries management on the Chesapeake Bay, on stream
conservation throughout the state, on reservoirs, and on environmental defense
issues related to highway construction, offshore oil development, dredged spoil
disposal, forest preservation, housing development issues, stream
channelization, wetlands preservation and a variety of other subject areas.
Nick Carter has been
national chairman of the American Fisheries Society's environmental concerns
committee. He has received the Izaak Walton League's award for habitat
conservation in the Chesapeake Bay region and a Governor's citation for excellence. He
has been given the Dr. Nancy Foster Habitat Conservation Award by the National
Marine Fisheries Service. Upon retirement, he was made an "Admiral of the Chesapeake Bay"
by the Governor’s office. Nick is presently active in environmental education.
Ed Merrifield
Ed Merrifield retired at a young age after twenty years as a
Chiropractic Doctor in private practice. He then launched himself into a
second career of environmental service. He was elected to the position of
Chair of the Maryland Chapter of the Sierra Club, and Chair of the Montgomery
Group of the Sierra Club. He is the Maryland Delegate to the National Sierra
Club Council of Club Leaders. He is an appointed member of the Maryland State
Water Quality Advisory Committee (MD-SWQAC) and the Maryland Middle Potomac
Tributary Team, and is the Coordinator of water issues for Maryland Sierra
Club. He has been involved with both State and Federal environmental issues
and was the Sierra Club’s “point man” for the TMDL (Total Maximum Daily Load) lawsuit
against the EPA in Maryland. Ed recently embarked on a full time position as
the Potomac Riverkeeper, accepting the challenge of growing the Riverkeeper,
Inc. organization and helping it fulfill its mission as a “one-stop-shop”
advocate for the Potomac River.
Ed Stennett
Ed Stennett is a retired
electronics engineer. He holds both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in
engineering from the George Washington University. Most of his career was spent in association with
Xerox and IBM where he held management positions for many years.
He has had a life long
concern about the environment, and particularly the environmental impact of
mushrooming population growth. Upon retirement he became active with the Maryland
Chapter of the Sierra Club where he was elected to executive committees at both
the county and state level. In working with other activists on local
environmental problems, Ed became increasingly convinced that the environmental
movement would ultimately fail without greater attention to the population
growth problem. This view led to his book, In Growth We Trust, and the
founding of Growth Education Movement, Inc.
